Suppose an existing installation uses a TN-S earthing arrangement, with separate protective (PE) and neutral (N) conductors. Can a downstream extension recombine them into a PEN conductor and operate as TN-C?
The key principle
Once the protective and neutral functions have been separated into PE and N conductors, they should not simply be recombined downstream into a PEN conductor. This is a fundamental design point when extending a TN system and is reflected in IEC-based installation practice and national wiring rules.
Why does this matter?
A PEN conductor performs both protective and neutral functions. Its continuity, minimum cross-section, routing and connection conditions are therefore safety-critical. Recombining PE and N downstream can create unwanted current paths and undermine the intended protective-conductor arrangement.
What should the engineer check?
- Where the PEN conductor, if any, is originally separated into PE and N.
- The earthing arrangement required for the new extension.
- Protective conductor continuity and conductor sizing.
- Automatic disconnection conditions and prospective fault current.
- Whether residual-current devices are required and where they are permitted in the chosen arrangement.
- The applicable national implementation of IEC 60364 and project requirements.
Do not automatically change to TT
The fact that a TN-S-to-TN-C recombination is inappropriate does not mean that every extension must be converted to TT. In many projects, continuing the TN-S arrangement may be the appropriate solution. A TT arrangement is a separate design choice that requires its own earthing and protection assessment.
Engineering takeaway: identify the existing earthing architecture first. Do not treat TN-C, TN-S and TT as interchangeable cable-saving options.
